At Haydock English Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School, ‘Relationship and Sex’ education includes learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health. Sex and Relationship information and objectives are not taught in isolation, some aspects are taught in science, whilst others are taught as part of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Religious Education (A Journey in Love).

We believe that ‘A Journey in Love’, is an effective Relationship and Sex programme of study for our school to utilise, that provides children with accurate and appropriate age related information about the human body, reproduction, sex and sexual health. It also equips children and young people with the essential life skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful and non-exploitative relationships whilst teaching children about staying safe both on and off line.

The main objective in implementing ‘A Journey in Love’ scheme of work to our school is to continue to help and support young people throughout their physical, emotional and moral development. This successful programme, which will be firmly embedded in our Personal, Social, Health Economic Education (PSHE) and Religious Education studies, will support young people in learning to respect themselves and others and help them to move with confidence from childhood through adolescence into adulthood. ?

The ‘A Journey in Love’ programme will be taught throughout the school to all school aged children from Reception to Year Six. The children will study the following topics throughout their time at Haydock English Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School:

Nursery (children aged three and four) - Wonder at God’s Love

Reception (children aged four and five) – God Loves Each of Us in Our Uniqueness

Year One (children aged five and six) – We Meet God’s Love in Our Family

Year Two (children aged six and seven) – We Meet God’s Love in the Community

Year Three (children aged seven and eight) – How We live in Love

Year Four (children aged eight and nine) – God Loves us in Our Differences

Year Five (children aged nine and ten) – God Loves Me in My Changing and Development

Year Six (children aged ten and eleven) – The Wonder of God’s Love in Creating New Life

Parents and Guardians

We would hope that parents and guardians would support their child in accessing the teaching and learning of Sex and Relationship education however, we recognise that    they have the right to withdraw their child from non-compulsory Sex and Relationship lessons after discussions with teaching staff.
