PSHEE and Citzenship/Healthy Schools at Haydock English Martyrs

What is PSHEE and Citizenship?

PSHEE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education. It includes subjects such as sex and relationships education, drugs education.  Citizenship is about helping the children to understand their roles and responsibilities as a citizen. 

PSHEE and Citizenship underpins all other areas of the curriculum and is an integral part of the school ethos.  Much of PSHEE is based upon improving the children’s self esteem and confidence in order to allow the children to achieve their individual potential.

The Curriculum

At Haydock English Martyrs PSHEE is a strong part of the Curriculum. It is taught as a discrete subject as well as being a strong influence in other lessons.  The bulk of our PSHEE Teaching is done through a government project called Social and Emotional aspects of learning (SEAL) which covers the following topics, in the following order: 

Theme 1 - New beginnings, 

Theme 2 - Getting On and Falling Out,

Theme 3 - Say No to Bullying,

Theme 4 - Going for Goals,

Theme 5 - It’s Good to be Me,

Theme 6 – Relationships,

Theme 7 – Changes.

Healthy Schools.

A few years ago, a new framework called the Healthy Schools Framework came into place.  

This framework included standards that schools had to work towards and meet.  This ensures the quality of provision in schools. On achieving a number of specific standards schools are awarded National Healthy Schools Status.  So far we have achieved the following standards;

Sex and relationships Education,

Drugs Education,

Emotional Health and Well-Being,

Physical Education,

Safeguarding Children / Child Protection,

Food and Nutrition,

Anti-Harassment and Bullying.

As a result of this we were awarded National Healthy Schools status in 2005.

New Food Standards.

Following is a simplified guide and does not include school lunches.

Foods no longer allowed:-

  • Confectionary of all kinds.
  • Salt – egg on food.
  • Snacks such as crisps.
  • Cakes and biscuits (including breadsticks and crackers).
  • Deep fried food, starchy food and meat products are restricted.

What can we have? –

  • Fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds. (However, we will not be selling / providing nuts and seeds due to allergies).
  • Bread based products such as sandwiches.
  • Drinks – fruit juice, water and skimmed or semi-skimmed milk.

Exempt from the new standards – 

  • Parties and celebrations to mark religious festivals.
  • Fundraising events.
  • Rewards for achievement (although we follow our school policy and avoid giving confectionary as a reward).
  • Food used in teaching food preparation and cookery skills.
  • Food brought in on an occasional basis by parents or pupils.

Since the standards came in, we have stopped the provision of biscuits in KS1.  Reception and Nursery snacks have been re-evaluated. We are currently looking into how we can provide a healthy snack in KS2.  At present, the children bring in a snack form home.  

The standards became a legal requirement in September 2007. We are therefore implementing the standards in school in order to improve the health of the children.

Where Next?

As part of the Healthy Schools’ Framework, we are continuing to work on various standards to ensure good practice within the school.  We are currently working very hard to improve the provision of snack in KS2 in light of the new food standards.

Road Safety

Road Safety Officers came to work with the children in Key Stage 1 to increase their awareness of the dangers on the roads.  The officers worked with pairs of children showing them how to stay safe on the busy roads.

Parachute Games

This is one of our favourite team building games. We HAVE to work as a team to keep the ball on the parachute.
